Uncommon salivary gland cancers present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of their rarity, diverse histopathological features, variable clinical behavior, and evolving molecular classification.
This case-based session will bring together four speakers to discuss key aspects of diagnosis and management from complementary perspectives. Topics will include diagnostic pitfalls, surgical decision-making, management of the facial nerve and neck, indications for adjuvant treatment, and emerging molecularly targeted therapies.
Through moderated discussion and audience participation, the session aims to provide young otolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons with a practical, structured, and multidisciplinary approach to these complex tumors.

Dr. Ömer Bayır is an Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery specialist at Acıbadem University, Acıbadem Maslak Hospital. He graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in 2005 and completed his residency training in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the same university in 2010. He served as an observer at the European Institute of Oncology, focusing on head and neck surgery and robotic surgery. He became an Associate Professor in 2017 and a Professor in 2026. He completed his PhD in Cancer Biology in 2026.
Dr. Bayır has contributed chapters to both international and national books. He has presented his research at national and international conferences and has received awards at both levels. He has authored and co-authored over 100 publications and has been cited more than 600 times in national and international journals. He has served in various roles for numerous journals, including as an advisory board member and reviewer. He is a member of several national and international societies, including the European Head and Neck Society, the Asia-Pacific Society of Thyroid Surgery, and the Turkish Society of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. His main interests include head and neck surgery, transoral laser surgery (including laryngectomy procedures), transoral robotic surgery, and thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

Dr. Esra Nur Bayır is a Pathology Specialist and works in the Department of Medical Pathology at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. She graduated from medical school in 2016. In 2022, she became a Pathology Specialist at the University of Health Sciences, Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital. In 2025, she was awarded subspecialty certification in Cytopathology at the Department of Medical Pathology, Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, where she currently continues to work. She has publications in her field and takes part in national and international scientific meetings.

Associate Professor Sümerya Duru Birgi is a faculty member in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Ankara University, where she has continued her academic career since 2018. She completed her residency training at Hacettepe University in 2015 and subsequently served as a clinical researcher for three months at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds.
Her principal clinical and academic interests include head and neck cancers. She has actively participated in numerous academic studies and scientific meetings, with ongoing research focused on these areas. Her work is centered on the implementation of contemporary radiation oncology approaches and the multidisciplinary management of cancer patients. Through her academic and clinical practice, she aims to contribute to the advancement of cancer treatment and to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered oncologic care.
