In addition to my full clinical responsibilities as Director and Head of the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at Inselspital Bern, Switzerland, my academic profile is characterized by broad and sustained research activity across several areas of cranio-maxillofacial surgery. With the aim of generating evidence at the highest methodological level, I have designed and conducted a series of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials investigating the role of prophylactic antibiotics in the management of various types of facial fractures. In addition to clinical research, I have extensive experience in translational research across several fields of cranio-maxillofacial surgery. In this context, our group was the first worldwide to perform an in vivo evaluation of the corrosion and degradation mechanisms of standard-sized magnesium alloy plates comparable to those used clinically in humans. These pioneering experiments demonstrated the considerable potential of magnesium alloys as biodegradable materials for bone fixation.
