Prof. Gheorghe Mühlfay, MD, PhD, graduated from the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology in Târgu - Mureș, Romania in 1978. He completed a long-term fellowship at the Ulm University Clinic in Germany, and several short ones in the medical centers of Budapest and Pécs in Hungary, specializing in Rhinology, Otology and Skull Base Surgery. He dedicated himself to the dominant practice of the FESS method in Romanian otolaryngology and pursued the implementation of the technique through interdisciplinary collaborations with ophthalmologists, oral-maxillofacial surgeons and neurosurgeons. He addressed the treatment of orbitally complicated septic rhinosinusitis, respectively the ablation of tumors of the nasal fossae and accessory cavities. In ear surgery, he was concerned with hearing rehabilitation and the treatment of otic foci. And in mixed teams he addressed transnasal rhinobase disorders, pituitary and cerebral fossae pathologies.
Scientific research played an important role in his training, being a coordinator and member of Romanian and international research teams, having as study object the evaluation of the role of sense organs in the quality of life, the importance of the microbial complex in the pathophysiology of some systemic diseases and the surgical correlation of the symptoms in states of sinus hyperpneumatization with functional microsurgery techniques.
He promoted his results through presentations at international congresses of AAO-HNS, World Congress of Interamerican Association of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, European Society of ENT, European Society of Rhinology, Balkan Society of ENT, Turkish Society of ENT and HNS, respectively in the Pittsburgh Medical Center and Budapest as a Visiting professor, as well as through publications. He was an invited lecturer at national and international events. He is a Corresponding Member of the German ENT-HNS Society.
