This panel will explore the physiological characteristics, phoniatric aspects, and common voice-related problems encountered among traditional and turkish folk artists. These vocal traditions often require distinctive phonatory strategies, including prolonged phonation, high-intensity singing, extensive ornamentation, register transitions, and culturally specific resonance patterns that may differ substantially from western classical vocal techniques.
the panel will bring together clinical and artistic perspectives to discuss the normal physiological adaptations associated with traditional singing, the boundary between functional vocal behavior and pathology, and the most frequent problems seen in professional folk singers. Particular attention will be given to laryngeal biomechanics, vocal load, supraglottic activity, breathing patterns, resonance strategies, and the impact of performance habits on vocal health.
preventive approaches, early diagnosis, voice therapy, medical and surgical management, and collaboration between phoniatricians, otolaryngologists, voice therapists, and vocal instructors will also be discussed.

traditional and folk singing styles represent an important part of cultural identity and often involve highly specialized vocal techniques developed through long-standing artistic traditions. However, the physiological and clinical characteristics of these techniques remain insufficiently represented in conventional phoniatric literature, which has historically focused predominantly on western classical singing.
turkish and regional folk artists may employ vocal behaviors that appear unusual during standard laryngeal examination but may represent normal adaptations to a specific musical style. At the same time, the high vocal demands of professional performance can predispose singers to functional and organic voice disorders.
a culturally informed phoniatric approach is therefore essential for accurate assessment, prevention, and treatment. This panel aims to bridge traditional vocal practice and modern voice medicine, promoting evidence-based and artist-centered solutions for professional voice care.
The purpose of this proposal is to examine the physiological and phoniatric characteristics of traditional and turkish folk singing, identify common voice-related problems, and discuss practical strategies for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. The panel aims to promote a culturally informed and multidisciplinary approach to professional voice care while improving collaboration between clinicians, voice therapists, and traditional vocal artists.
Haldun OGUZ, M.D. graduated from Hacettepe University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology at Ankara Training & Research Hospital.
Professor OGUZ has more than 250 published book chapters, articles and presentations in international and national journals and meetings. His studies are cited more than 1500 times in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently the President of the Union of European Phoniatricians and the Turkish Professional Voice Society. He is the General Secretary of the Turkish Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. He is the former Vice President of European Academy of Phoniatrics (2018 – 2023). He was the President of Laryngology - Phoniatrics School of Turkish National ENT-HNS Society. He is the co-editor of a book entitled Clinical Voice Disorders. He has different assignments (associate editor, advisory board member, referee, English language editor) in 18 journals. He was deemed to deserve the degrees of Associate Professor of Otolaryngology in 2007, and Professor of Otolaryngology in 2013.
Haldun OGUZ is currently a faculty member of the Lokman Hekim University, School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. He is the founder (2016) and director of Fonomer Otorhinolaryngology Phoniatrics and Audiology Clinic in Ankara.

I am Dr. Ramil Hashimli, MD, PhD, Assoc. Prof., an otorhinolaryngologist, phoniatrician, laryngeal surgeon, and academic physician with over 25 years of clinical experience. My professional focus lies in voice disorders, phoniatrics, laryngology, and outcomes-oriented clinical research, with a particular interest in bridging clinical practice, structured data, and artificial intelligence.
I currently serve as Vice-President of the Central and West Asian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery (CWASOS) and as a member of the Extended Board of the Union of European Phoniatricians (UEP). Over the years, I have also served as Chair, Secretary, and member of the organizing and scientific committees of several national and international congresses and educational events.
A major part of my professional mission is to strengthen communication and scientific collaboration among otorhinolaryngologists across Central and West Asia. I am particularly committed to supporting the development of phoniatrics and laryngology in the region, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, and contributing to the training and professional growth of young physicians through educational programs, workshops, congresses, and international collaboration.
I am actively involved in the ongoing initiative supporting Baku as the host city for the UEP Congress 2029 and serve as Chair of the local working group coordinating preparations for this major international meeting.
In addition to my clinical and scientific activities, I am deeply committed to medical and interdisciplinary education. I introduced and currently teach Vocology as an academic discipline in Azerbaijan, bringing together voice science, vocal physiology, clinical phoniatrics, and the needs of professional voice users.
I am also the founder and developer of APDVoice, an AI-oriented structured data and analytics platform designed to transform routine ENT–phoniatric documentation into standardized real-world evidence suitable for multicenter research, outcomes analysis, and future artificial intelligence applications.
My current academic interests include digital transformation in voice care, structured clinical datasets, precision phoniatrics, professional voice, laryngeal biomechanics, and the development of AI-ready clinical infrastructure. Alongside clinical practice, I remain actively engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate education, international scientific collaboration, and initiatives aimed at strengthening phoniatrics, laryngology, and professional exchange both regionally and globally.
