Treatment Approaches In Laryngeal Cancer

Early tumors are usually treated with

monotherapy: endoscopic laser resection,

open partial laryngectomy or radiotherapy,

with a good oncological prognosis.

Currently, endoscopic laser resection and

radiotherapy are the preferred options,

with a higher risk of salvage total laryngectomy

and higher treatment costs when radiotherapy

is used. For tumors staged as T3,

if the surgical option is total laryngectomy,

a non-surgical organ preservation protocol

with the combination of radiotherapy and

chemotherapy may be indicated.

With this, in most cases, larynx preservation

is achieved. However, anatomical preservation

often does not correspond to functional preservation.

If the surgical option is partial laryngectomy,

both organ preservation options should

be considered: surgical (partial laryngectomy)

or non-surgical. For more advanced tumors (T4),

total laryngectomy is the option with

the best oncological results, despite the

mutilation caused by the definitive tracheotomy.

The aim of this symposium is to critically discuss

the various therapeutic options for laryngeal cancer.
