Overcoming difficulties in Frontal Sinus Surgery

Devyani Lal, M.D. is Professor of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery and Chair, Division of Rhinology, Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Dr. Lal is Dean of Education, Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She is program director of the Rhinology-Endoscopic Cranial Base Fellowship program and the Rhinology Research Fellowship. Dr. Lal serves on the Executive Operations Team, Mayo Clinic in Arizona and  Mayo Clinic Education Committee. Dr. Lal was recognized as the 2019 Charles H. Mayo Distinguished Mayo Clinician and the Mayo Residents and Fellows Teacher of the Year.

 

Dr. Lal is Chair, Rhinology and Allergy Education Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and is Consultant to the Rhinology and Paranasal Sinus Committee of the AAO-HNS. She is President of the Association of American Otolaryngologists of Indian Heritage. She is Chair, Women in Rhinology Section of the American Rhinologic Society (ARS). Dr. Lal serves on the ARS Development Committee and has served on the ARS Executive Board, Education Committee, Continuing Medical Education and Rhinology Training Council.  Dr Lal has directed multiple international courses at Mayo Clinic on complex sinonasal and endoscopic cranial base surgery. She serves on the editorial board of the “International Forum for Allergy and Rhinology” flagship journal of the ARS and is Associate Editor for the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy.  She is ad-hoc reviewer for high-impact journals in ENT and Neurosurgery. Dr. Lal has been invited as visiting professor and to deliver orations at several prestigious organizations.

Dr. Lal has been co-author of several international consensus statements, including the International Consensus Statement on International consensus statement on allergy and rhinology: rhinosinusitis 2021, European Position Paper on Sinusitis and Nasal Polyps 2020 and the International consensus statement on allergy and rhinology: Sinonasal tumors 2023.

Dr. Lal’s research focuses on inflammatory and neoplastic conditions of the sinonasal cavity and cranial base.  Her current translational research projects investigate microbiome, transcriptome and epigenetic changes in chronic rhinosinusitis. Her work on multiomics of chronic rhinosinusitis was recognized as the best 2024 basic science research thesis by the Triological Society. Dr. Lal has over 150 scientific publications and chapters in the field of Rhinology-Cranial Base Surgery. She is lead author and co-editor of the book, “Frontal Sinus Surgery”. She is the Associate Editor, Cumming’s Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, 8<sup>th</sup> Edition, the flagship textbook in ENT as well as author of the chapter on “Primary Sinus Surgery” in the book for several editions.

Dr. Lal attended medical school at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, India, followed by junior and senior residencies in Otolaryngology at University College of Medical Sciences and Maulana Azad Medical College respectively in New Delhi, India. She underwent additional fellowship training at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, London, UK.  After moving to the United States, she completed a research fellowship at University of Chicago, IL followed by residency training in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Loyola University, IL, and fellowship in Rhinology and Endoscopic Cranial Base Surgery at Stanford University, CA.
