Dr. Cuneyt M. Alper is currently a Professor Emeritus at Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is a part-time physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP). Dr. Alper attended medical school and completed otolaryngology residency in Turkey. He moved to Pittsburgh, USA in 1992, completed pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at CHP and became faculty in 1996. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and 25 book chapters. He served as an Editor in “Bluestone and Stool’s Pediatric Otolaryngology, 4th Ed” and as 1st Editor of the books “Advanced Therapy in Otitis Media”, “Decision Making in Ear Nose Throat Disorders, 1st Ed” and “Decision Making in Otolaryngology, 2nd Ed.”, He served as the Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship Program Director at CHP for 10 years. He conducted research for more than 3 decades on otitis media, viral infections and Eustachian tube. Dr. Alper’s clinical and surgical interests include management of chronic otitis media, hearing loss, cholesteatoma and Eustachian tube dysfunction.
He was graduated from Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty in 1999. He was completed Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) Residency program at Inonu University Medical Faculty between 1999-2003. He was appointed to OHNS department of Gaziantep University Medical Faculty as assistant professor in 2004. He was at The Ohio State University, Medical Faculty, Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Otology and Neurotology in USA in 2007. He was appointed to associate professor at The Inonu University, Medical Faculty, Department of OHNS in 2010, December. He was appointed to professor at The Inonu University, Medical Faculty, Department of OHNS in 2014, June. He was appointed the chair of OHNS Department at Inonu University from 2016 to 2018. He was working in Malatya and İzmir privately and part-time at Gaziantep Sanko University Hospital since 2019-2023. He has been working in Istanbul Atlas University Medicine Hospital since 2023.
Dr. Hızalan graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. In 1980, he spent three months as a visiting physician at Gentofte Hospital (Copenhagen) under the supervision of Prof. Mirko Tos, an experience that strongly influenced his later academic orientation toward otology. He subsequently joined Bursa Uludağ University, where he served on the faculty for 37 years until his retirement.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hızalan has been actively involved in professional organizations at both national and international levels. He was a member of the Steering Committee of the European Academy of Otology and Neurotology (EAONO) and served as President of the Bursa Society of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the Turkish Board of ORL-HNS, and the Balkan Association of ORL-HNS. He has delivered more than 50 instructional courses and invited lectures at international scientific meetings and holds several honorary memberships in professional societies.
His academic work has focused primarily on otology and pediatric otorhinolaryngology, with a particular interest in education and the dissemination of surgical knowledge. Over the years, he has contributed extensively to postgraduate training and international collaboration in the field.
