Description and background: transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) is a well-established organ-preserving treatment modality for selected laryngeal cancers, offering excellent oncologic outcomes with favorable functional results when applied with appropriate patient selection and meticulous surgical technique. This instructional course will provide a practical and step-by-step overview of transoral laser surgery for supraglottic and glottic laryngeal cancers, focusing on indication criteria, exposure strategies, laser settings, and resection techniques. Key technical aspects such as en bloc versus multi-bloc resection, margin assessment, management of close or positive margins, and decision-making in cases with challenging exposure will be discussed. Surgical videos and representative clinical cases will be used to demonstrate operative nuances, common pitfalls, and complication management, including bleeding, airway compromise, and aspiration. The course will also address the integration of TLM into multidisciplinary treatment planning, including the role of neck management, adjuvant therapy, and follow-up strategies.
outcome objectives: at the end of this course, participants will be able to:
identify appropriate indications and contraindications for TLM in laryngeal cancer
understand key technical steps and laser safety principles
apply oncologic concepts of margin control in transoral resections
recognize and avoid common technical and oncologic pitfalls
integrate TLM into a multidisciplinary treatment strategy for laryngeal cancer
The purpose of this course is to provide head and neck surgeons with a practical and evidence-based approach to transoral laser microsurgery in laryngeal cancer, emphasizing proper indication, surgical technique, oncologic safety, and functional preservation.
I was born in 1982, in, Zonguldak , Turkey. I have graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine (Ankara, TURKEY) in 2006. I have completed my Otorhinolaryngology residency in Gazi University Faculty of Medicine (Ankara, TURKEY) in 2011. I am still working as a clinician and teaching staff in Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department. My special area of interest and expertise is head and neck surgery. During my residency and after getting ORL expertise, I have visited Netherlands Cancer Institutue (3 months) and Pitssburgh University Faculty of Medicine Head and Neck Surgery Departments, respectively, for this purposes. I have ongoing studies and have many published manuscripts and papers on Otorhinolaryngology and especially on Head and Neck surgery. My special interests for head and neck surgery are; parotidectomy and other salivary gland cancers surgery, transoral laser surgery for larynx carcinoma, oral cavity cancer surgery, total laryngectomy and voice rehabilitation (provax), neck dissection, transoral robotic surgery, thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy, head and neck reconstruction with local flaps, parapahryngeal space surgery, glomus caroticum surgery, maxillectomy and other nasal and paranazal sinus surgery including transnasal endoscopic approach, congentinal neck lump surgery (branchial and TGD cyts), head and neck sarcoma surgery, neck schawannoma surgery.

Prof. Kerem Ozturk is a Professor of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Ege University, Izmir, Turkey. He has more than 15 years of experience in the surgical management of head and neck cancers. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the field of head and neck surgery and oncology. Prof. Ozturk is actively involved in professional societies and multidisciplinary educational activities related to head and neck cancer surgery. His current work focuses on optimizing surgical decision-making and improving oncologic and functional outcomes through evidence-based, technique-oriented approaches.
