Dr. Katherine Yung is a laryngologist and Director of Laryngology at Sutter California Voice and Swallowing in San Francisco. With a lifelong background in music, she was drawn to laryngology’s intersection of artistry and medicine. She previously spent a decade on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco, where she served as Acting Director of the UCSF Voice and Swallowing Center, was promoted to Associate Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology, and received the Sooy Award for Clinical Excellence. She later founded San Francisco Voice & Swallowing, nationally recognized for professional voice and gender-affirming voice care.

Dr. Yung consults for the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Broadway SF, and San Francisco Opera and is a member of the International Association of TransVoice Surgeons.

Since 1999, my medical and surgical practice has been limited to voice care. I maintain an

informational web site on voice disorders - voicedoctor.net, preceptor medical students in their

early years at Oregon Health Sciences University, offer an international fellowship in laryngology as

well as short observerships to physicians, speech therapists, voice teachers and interested students.

I produce “voxdoc, the voicedoctor” on YouTube, including Laryngology 101, a series of learning

videos. I published “Why is there a frog in my throat? A guide to hoarseness.” I frequently lecture

internationally on laryngology and phonosurgery. I remain surprised at how much there is still to learn

about the larynx.
