Prof. Dr. med. Jens Peter Klussmann is Director of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University Hospital of Cologne. He studied medicine in Düsseldorf and Cologne (graduating summa cum laude) and completed his specialist training in Cologne, with research stays at the Sir Albert Sakzewski Virus Research Centre in Brisbane and the University of Iowa. In 2004, he habilitated with work on HPV diagnostics in head and neck cancer. From 2009 to 2018, he was Chair and Director in Giessen before returning to Cologne in 2018. Prof. Klussmann is a leading expert in HPV-associated head and neck cancer and has published over 500 scientific papers. He chairs the German Working Group Otolaryngology–Oncology of the German Cancer Society, is a member of numerous professional societies, and was elected to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2023. His research focuses on molecular oncology, biomarker development, and personalized treatment approaches for head and neck tumors.

Professor Mercante is involved in several National and International Clinical Research Groups as Coordinator and Principal Investigator, with the aim to promote a multidisciplinary approach to the Head and Neck Cancer Patient in order to reach an early diagnosis and to offer a personalized treatment, also focusing on the quality of life of the patient.

His clinical activities are mainly devoted to Head and Neck surgery, particularly to thyroid and parathyroid glands surgery, minimally invasive approaches, robotic surgery and open neck surgery for laryngeal and pharyngeal cancers, major and minor salivary glands tumors, reconstructive head and neck surgery with free and pedunculated flaps, as well as to the treatment of functional pathologies through phonosurgery, endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery, sleep apnea surgery and pediatric ENT surgery.

I am a Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist Head, Neck and Thyroid  Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. and Honorary Senior Lecturer at KCL Medical School.

I graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1988, trained in Nottingham, Manchester and Philadelphia.

I provide a dedicated tertiary head and neck oncological and thyroid surgery service at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. I am the Surgical Thyroid Oncology Lead and the Surgical Head, Neck and Thyroid Oncology Research Co-Lead.

I have published over 180 original articles, 28 chapters and UK national head, neck and thyroid cancer guidelines. I edited Springer Atlas in Head and Neck Surgery in 2024.

I am the Vice-Chair of EBEOR-HNS, Past President of the European Laryngological Society, Past Audit Lead of ENT H&N UK and a faculty member of several national and international courses.

I am married with 2 children, 1 grandchild and love nature and triathlon.
