This session provides a comprehensive guide to the pathway of training and certification in Otorhinolaryngology (ORL). It will cover curriculum standards, surgical competency requirements, and the examination processes for both the Turkish National Board and the European Board of ORL-HNS (EBEORL).
Outcome Objectives Participants will be able to:
Outline the key milestones in ORL residency training.
Compare the requirements for national and European board certification.
Develop a strategic approach for successful examination preparation and lifelong learning.
Background Standardized training and a robust certification process are fundamental to ensuring high standards of patient care and safety in ORL. Achieving board certification validates a specialist's expertise and is a critical step for professional recognition and career advancement.
Haldun OGUZ, M.D. graduated from Hacettepe University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology at Ankara Training & Research Hospital.
Professor OGUZ has more than 250 published book chapters, articles and presentations in international and national journals and meetings. His studies are cited more than 1500 times in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently the President of the Union of European Phoniatricians and the Turkish Professional Voice Society. He is the General Secretary of the Turkish Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. He is the former Vice President of European Academy of Phoniatrics (2018 – 2023). He was the President of Laryngology - Phoniatrics School of Turkish National ENT-HNS Society. He is the co-editor of a book entitled Clinical Voice Disorders. He has different assignments (associate editor, advisory board member, referee, English language editor) in 18 journals. He was deemed to deserve the degrees of Associate Professor of Otolaryngology in 2007, and Professor of Otolaryngology in 2013.
Haldun OGUZ is currently a faculty member of the Lokman Hekim University, School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. He is the founder (2016) and director of Fonomer Otorhinolaryngology Phoniatrics and Audiology Clinic in Ankara.

Prof. Dr. Fazil Apaydin is working as a professor at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Ege University in Izmir, Turkey. His subspecialty is facial plastic surgery and he is the head of Division of facial plastic surgery since 1999. He passed the board exam of the International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies in 2007 to become European board certified in facial plastic surgery. He is the past president of the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery which is the biggest society on facial plastic surgery in Europe since 1977. He is the UEMS representative of the academy in the UEMS-ENT committee since 2010. He is the executive board member of the Turkish Society of Facial Plastic Surgery. He is a senior advisor of the International Board Certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is the treasurer of the International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies since 2022. He is the general secretary of the European Board of Examination and Certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is the honorary member of the Russian Society of Plastic Surgery, Society of Rhinoplasty Surgeons of South Africa, Facialis Academy of Colombia, and the Facial Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery India Trust. He has been lecturing, teaching and operating on facial plastic surgery procedures within the last 26 years all over the world. He has written numerous articles and book chapters on facial plastic surgery. His book named as “Septal Surgery Challenges in Rhinoplasty” was published a few months ago by Springer.
Prof. Dr. Hülya Eyigör graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Akdeniz University, Türkiye, in 1996 and completed her residency training in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Adnan Menderes University in 2001. She currently serves as Professor of Otolaryngology at Antalya Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, where she is actively involved in clinical practice, research, and specialist training. Her research interests include rhinology, sleep medicine, and clinical and translational research in otolaryngology.
Prof. Dr. Eyigör also holds a Master's degree and a PhD in Medical Education from Akdeniz University. She has a longstanding interest in medical education and continues to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education through curriculum development, program evaluation, competency-based education, and accreditation.
Myra Zaheer, originally from the Midwest, is a fourth-year medical student at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She is passionate about otolaryngology, with research interests in gender disparities in academic medicine, improving healthcare access for underserved populations, and developing innovative hearing care models in rural communities. She serves as Co-Director of Partnerships for Global Surgery, where she leads efforts to develop curricula that expand research and medical training in resource-limited settings and advance capacity-building through bidirectional partnerships in Ethiopia.
