Sessions
Facial synkinesis is the most common chronic facial movement disorder that develops following facial nerve injury. Periocular synkinesis is one of the most common and bothersome types of facial synkinesis. Treatment of periocular synkinesis can be challenging with frequent persistence or recurrence of symptoms after treatment. This surgical video demonstrates a technique for treating periocular synkinesis: orbicularis oculi selective myectomy with autologous microfat grafting.
Description: Facial synkinesis is the most common chronic facial movement disorder that develops following facial nerve injury. It is one of the most under-diagnosed and under-treated conditions of the head and neck. Diagnosis and treatment are evolving with our understanding of this condition. This lecture will provide an update on the latest diagnostics and treatment approaches for facial synkinesis.
Outcome Objectives: Recognize the presentation of facial synkinesis, diagnose the different subtypes of facial synkinesis, understand treatment approaches for facial synkinesis including physiotherapy, chemodenervation, and surgical treatments.
Structure: 30-minute keynote lecture providing an modern definition and understanding of facial synkinesis and evolving treatment approaches including patient case examples.
