DESCRIPTION:<p style="margin-left: 0px!important\;"><strong>Description:</s
trong> Central auditory processing disorders (CAPD) present diagnostic cha
llenges due to the involvement of complex neural networks responsible for
sound localization\, auditory discrimination\, and temporal processing. Th
is session explores the application of electrophysiological methods—part
icularly auditory brainstem responses (ABR)\, middle latency responses (ML
R)\, and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP)—as objective tools t
o assess central auditory function. Emphasis will be placed on clinical ap
plicability\, interpretation strategies\, and integration with behavioural
  test findings.</p><p style="margin-left: 0px!important\;"><strong>Outcome
Objectives:</strong> At the end of this session\, participants will be ab
 le to:</p><ol><li><p style="margin-left: 0px!important\;">Define the neura
 l mechanisms underlying central auditory processing.</p></li><li><p style=
 "margin-left: 0px!important\;">Describe key electrophysiological technique
 s relevant to CAPD assessment.</p></li><li><p style="margin-left: 0px!impo
rtant\;">Identify electrophysiological patterns associated with central au
 ditory dysfunction.</p></li><li><p style="margin-left: 0px!important\;">In
tegrate objective and behavioural findings for a comprehensive clinical ev
 aluation.</p></li></ol><p style="margin-left: 0px!important\;"><strong>Bac
kground:</strong> Central auditory processing involves the perceptual proc
essing of auditory information within the central nervous system and the n
eurobiological activity that underpins this processing. CAPD can affect la
 nguage development\, learning\, and everyday communication\, particularly
in pediatric and geriatric populations. Behavioural tests\, while informat
ive\, are limited by their reliance on attention\, memory\, and language s
 kills.</p><p style="margin-left: 0px!important\;">Electrophysiological met
hods provide a means of assessing auditory system integrity and processing
efficiency independent of patient cooperation. Studies have demonstrated
the value of CAEPs and MLRs in identifying cortical involvement and tempor
al abnormalities in CAPD cases. Moreover\, the frequency-following respons
e (FFR) has been proposed as a promising tool to evaluate the encoding of
complex sounds at the subcortical level.</p><p style="margin-left: 0px!imp
ortant\;">These objective measures complement behavioural evaluations and
can support differential diagnosis\, especially in populations with limite
d behavioural test reliability. As audiology increasingly incorporates neu
rophysiological tools into routine practice\, electrophysiology-based asse
ssments are becoming vital for evidence-based management of CAPD.</p>
